As the study developed, another strong sociological consideration became evident, as all three groups were more likely to desire surgery for girls; aesthetic distinctions also emerged, as surgeons were more likely to call for surgery when scars were visible, and patients and parents were more desirous for operations on hidden scars… …French’s research into how organisations respond to contaminants within soil found that many authorities see natural remediation as an appropriate solution to the release of pollutant substances into the ground. While taking advantage of a natural process in order to diffuse a potentially dangerous situation can certainly be said to be cost and labour efficient, French urges authorities to carefully monitor the subsurface in order to ensure that any pollution is handled in a responsible and sustainable way. With a view to making any efforts here as effective as possible, the SoilCAM team evaluates traditional methods of soil and groundwater sampling. French focuses on studies that obtain figures on soil pollution using groundwater samples taken from wells. Here, she notes that such methods have the potential to miss the contaminant flow paths due to the heterogeneity of the soil. The group has found that current forecasting tools lead to inadequate results and Russchenberg articulates, “it still impossible to predict the timing, location and intensity of extreme events with useful accuracy.” Now, the team is focusing attention on how we can isolate the data that takes account of urban factors through the use of specialist equipment, including X-band radars, disdrometers and wind profilers… …Just as the behaviour of lupin legumes brings Murray’s team closer to fully mapping out genetic understandings of symbiosis, studies of cell mutation have enabled the group to develop their studies of standard cell behaviour. Alongside finely-tuned explorations of the types of genetic make-up that make symbiosis possible, the researchers are also exploring cases of mutation in order to shed new light upon the development of nodules. While, in this case, specific genes are yet to be identified, the team is experimenting with how to restrict intracellular infection at an early stage. By exploring such patterns of mutation, Murray’s group has been able to thoroughly interrogate the effect of the gene, a mode of thinking that has enabled the team to explore the interdependent nature of infection and nodule organogenesis… In Maine, Wagner’s group has wisely researched and articulated mutual aims in order to cultivate a balanced system based on the nuance of the timber industry. As the team prioritise multi-disciplined, collaborative thinking, their involvement in a national initiative with a similar focus seems like a natural progression. Wagner’s work in Maine attracted the attention of the Center for Advanced Forestry Systems, a group that initially comprised of four universities from across the USA. Now the Center has nine partner institutions, and the organisation oversees research that echoes the CFRU’s core values in its work across the continent as it endeavours to solve complex problems that affect the timber industry across the United States. With this in mind, Maine University’s status as a partner here seems like an incredible logical decision, with Wagner articulating that: ‘The decision for the University of Maine to join CAFS was an easy one.’…
